The 65th Anniversary of Nuclear Energy Industry: Scientific conference after the world`s first nuclear power plant in Obninsk

June 26 in the city of Obninsk Kaluga region held celebrations dedicated to the launch of the world's first nuclear power plant. This will increase the environmental safety of nuclear power plants, and will make full use of the potential of nuclear fuel. We are talking about the fact that in the General circuit of nuclear power, traditional thermal neutron reactors used at the vast majority of nuclear power plants would work in tandem with fast neutron reactors. And Russia is the only country in the world where industrial "fast" nuclear power reactors are operating now. These are BN-600 and BN-800 reactors at Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Station. That is the BN-800 is designed for testing some of the technologies for closing the nuclear fuel cycle. It also became a prototype of more powerful commercial reactors BN-1200, which are planned to be used as a "fast" component of the future two-component nuclear power.

Today Russia is the 5th country in the world by the number of nuclear reactors, the leader in the nuclear icebreaker fleet. By 2030, it is planned to decommission all RBMK-type reactors (familiar to us from Chernobyl). VVER, more modern water reactors, should last until the middle of the 21st century. Further, it is planned to finally close the fuel cycle.

Nuclear power provides an opportunity to develop unique medical technologies. In Dmitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region, which became the center of the nuclear innovation cluster, the first and largest center of nuclear medicine, which will use all the opportunities that peaceful atom gives for the diagnosis and treatment of deadly diseases, is preparing to open. There are  three laboratories dealing with this problem, and developing unique isotopic drugs that act on different types of cancer, and severe arthritis and other dangerous diseases, in Obninsk, too.

The IAEA representative Mikhail Chudakov recalled that the role of nuclear energy is very important for the implementation of the Paris agreements on the prevention of global warming, and so far it has no alternatives. The same was said by the President of the world Association of organizations operating nuclear power plants Tom Mitchell. A direct link between the level of poverty and electricity consumption has been derived. 1 billion people on the planet now have very limited access to electricity, and in particular, this problem is being solved by the help of Russia, which has signed agreements on the construction of 36 new power units in 12 countries.

In the structure of "Rosatom" there is the engineering Department, Rosatomenergo, since 2006. Its share in the total product of Russian engineering is 24% already; this equipment is primarily for nuclear power plants, as well as for heat power and chemical industry.

Now it works in the Museum mode – the station, which made a huge contribution to fundamental scientific research, was finally decommissioned in 2008. In comparison with modern ones, its reactor is a toy, you can even touch it.

Leypunsky Institute of Physics and Power Engineering in Obninsk, as well as their colleagues from the Obninsk RPA "Typhoon", engaged in radiation monitoring of the environment, the American TV series "Chernobyl" watched, and with the exception of certain inaccuracies, approved.
