Russian engineers designed building structures with the help of artificial intelligent

Autodesk and “ModulTehStroy” summed up the results of the project on generative design for the future industry, in the process of which specialists from all over the Russian Federation were able to apply artificial intelligence for design, as well as to present new concepts of connecting nodes for modular construction.

The General Director of the company "ModulTehStroy" noted that the purpose of the project was to develop a reusable universal modular design, the use of which can be possible in absolutely any weather conditions and even beyond the Earth. "We expect that in the near future the found solutions will be used not only in mass construction, but also in the construction of unique objects," Vadim Mihailov said.

Neodymium magnets

Honorable first place went to the project NEOD by Eugenij Tulubenski (Studio "IDEA DESIGN" and Bryansk state technical University). As part of this solution, the coupling is carried out through the use of a magnetic alloy, and the docking Assembly consists of only one part. The concept is recognized as the best among the declared due to the universality of the installation sites, as well as due to the absence of any additional embedded elements in the body of the block modules. The project proved to be cost-effective, since the generative design significantly reduces the amount of expensive materials, and at the same time the weight of the product, while maintaining the reliability of fastening. The concept allows to use the docking station many times, although it will require special qualification of installers. To remove the attachment there is a special recess under the instrument.

Spherical knot

The three leaders also included the concept of Mikhail Chistyakov (MY Studio), which was given the second place. The basis of the concept is the presence of a spherical knot with diagonal rods that connect the corners of the blocks using standard studs and nuts. The advantageous side of the project is the generality of the design – a single element can be connected at once four block modules. The use of generative design allowed to optimize the shape of the knot, as well as to take into account the compression, shear and twisting loads. The result of the project was the production of a product weighing 5 kg and with a safety factor of 4.

Planted molding

The three leaders were closed by the concept of Artem Lelikov (Leroy Merlin, NUST MISIS). The advantage of the solution - attachment point  in the form of planted molding, was the relative simplicity of the element in the form of a solid cast plate. Similar solutions in the form of outer molding are already in use.

Generative design is used by the most innovative companies all over the world from NASA to General Motors and Airbus, but in the construction of this project was one of the first, despite the successful symbiosis of industry and construction for many years.  Project Manager Natalia Rajkova noted that such projects are characterized by the complexity of communication between architects and designers. "Despite this, we had no problems with the device of this communication, as “ModulTehStroy” uses the cloud platform BIM 360. We received a standard assembly of a modular design from the system, on the basis of this model, the designers were engaged in the development of a attachment point in the Fusion 360 cloud system," -Natalia said.
